Planning blog Assessment

This lesson we had the oppourtunity to go around the classroom and view the blogs of other groups. this was very useful as it inspired us to update our blog in a number of ways. The other groups also viewed our blog and assessed the ways in which we can improve, and what our strong points are.
Overall, most groups thought that our analysis of other videos is very good and detailed, and that most of our blogs have enough detail in them. They thought that we had a good amount of background research, such as inspirational images, but a weakness is that we do not have a detailed prop list. We feel that this is important to work on because our entire video will be made up of props. Another thing we need to work on is a Call Sheet to show that our group is organised.

To Do List:
- Call Sheet
- Upload Animatic
- Detailed Prop List
- Risk Assessment

More Video Analysis

My Boulder

This is a band called 'The King Blues' which has been suggested to us that may make our video have another dimension. This would mean that it wouldn't be istop motion all the way through which is going to be very time consuming and stressful. We could combine istop motion with live action so we can maybe incorporate a band into it. In this video it switches from puppetry and animation to live action by zooming in on something and then zooming back out to a completely different scene. It also shows the animation side of the video through different camera angles such as looking through binoculars. This creates a great effect and something that we will take into consideration.

LETS HANG THE LANDLORD by THE KING BLUES

This is another video by the same band who have looked at another way to create a cartoon effect. This works well and adds an comedy element to the video. I thought this is a good way of intergating two different dimensions to make it more interesting.

A what to build list!

We are starting to prepare ourselves for filming our video, and therefore we need to make all the necessary props. We plan to make a list of all the objects needed, and divide it equally so that we can make them as efficiently as possible. We are therefore going to annotate the lyrics, and decide upon all the objects that we need to make.

Here comes the milkmaid with her firm shoulders and the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined.
Her hands are strong like the night we all sung her song.

Through the days, the night confides in her, her pales are filled with stars, fallen from the sky.
She day dreams, the day that she leaves, to become an actress, the milkmaid superstar.
And her hands stayed strong like the night, we sung this song song.

Here comes the milkmaid with her, firm shoulders and the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined.

Her father long since gone, left her with nothing, to live upon.
But a brother too young to learn.
Her mother too old to work.
The milkmaid goes on.

Here comes the milkmaid with her, firm shoulders and the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined.

One night a show came through town, the milkmaid in the crowd, was standing out.
A director took her hand, "I understand you'd like to act" her made her try, she tried with all her heart and she left with the show and a leading part.

Here comes the Milkmaid with her firm shoulders an the attitude of Caesar for one so disposable she's never been that way inclined.
Her hands are strong and tonight we sing this song

What we will need:
A milkmaid, her pales, crown, big hands, cows, grass, trees, director, brother, mother, a young milkmaid, stars, an audience, a sun, a moon, thought bubble, a "famous" milkmaid, a coach.
Our backgrounds will include, hills, a stage, a night sky

Test Footage

This lesson we spent some time testing iStop Motion and the different conditions we would need to consider. This was a very useful task as we feel we are now much more prepared to film our video. We have uploaded the videos as shown below.

Overall, we have learnt a number of things that will help to make our video a success. We learnt that zooming in with the camera does not work, an the camera automatically zooms out by itself. Although we might be able to change the settings, we found that holding the camera manually and moving in closer to the object makes it a lot easier and it flows better. The other thing we learnt that would make our video flow better was by capturing the images faster, and moving the objects slower within the frame. This stops the objects from jumping too far and confusing the audience. Another problem that arose was shadows. We need to be sure that all shadows are out of the frame before taking the still because this makes it looks unprofessional and focus is taken off of the objects in the video. Another problem we experienced was the backdrop falling over and having to set up our objects over and over. To prevent this we will have to make sure that all equipment is in place and sturdy before filming. We all hope that will have enough patience and understand that it will take time to make it look as effective as we would like it to. We will make sure to set aside enough time in order to be able to pay great detail to what we are filming.

Our Productive, Production Team Meeting!

We decided to call a meeting with our technician to discuss when and where we will be able to film our music video. We asked him whether it would be possible to take our computer from the classroom and take it into a controlled condition and be able to film our sequence there. Our technician however, stated that there are a number of different groups using the computers at other times, and therefore removing a computer from the classroom would be impossible. Instead, thankfully our computer is positioned in a place where it would be possible to film during other lessons where the computer is not being used. Therefore we have compared time tables again, and worked out when this computer is not being used, and have come up with a few hours a week where we can film.
Our technician also pointed out, that our video might look more effective if we use a still camera as it would be of better quality. We do not need to use a video camera as we are not filming anything moving. We were really pleased with this idea as it was something that we had not considered but will improve our video immensely.
We also discussed the possibility of doing all our filming after college where the other groups would not be there, but we are not yet sure f we will need this time, or if we will be able to stay in college.
We overall felt that this was a positive meeting, the only downside being that we can not film in controlled conditions in our own time. We understand why this is not possible and are fine with filming during our frees and taking time out after college to put extra effort into our piece.

Today I will be uploading our storyboards onto the computer and editing them to make an animatic. Because we think our chorus will be similar every time it plays, we haven't repeated this in the storyboard, and therefore when the animatic is made we will feature the verses as these will contain different content that will be important to see. Some of the action happening in our sequence is fairly complicated, therefore our animatic will show what we are trying to achieve.

'Milkmaid - Kid Harpoon' Official Video

This is the official music video which is mostly all preformance based and doesn't really tell the story which we will try to do.

Our milkmaid idea

This is a picture of a milkmaid that we will try and copy in our video. This is a olden version of a milkmaid which we are going to use instead of a modern look.

Group Analysis of some istopmotion music videos

This is a great example of 2D iStopMotion. There is no narrative in this video but again it has bright colours and the characters follow some of the lyrics. The audience seems to relate to the characters as you follow them through the different settings and activities they encounter. We hope that the audience builds this kind of relationship to the Milkmaid character in our video too, as we feel it involves them more, and will help them enjoy it more. This video also personifies characters and objects that you would not usually give these characteristics, which is similar to our video. It also involves a lot of different transactions for the characters in the video, for example at the beginning, when the touch of a finger is what triggers the change of clothes on the rabbit on the right. The video is quirky and fun and is very enjoyable to watch, which is what we are aiming to create in our music video. We really liked this video and felt that it was similar to ours in many ways, we will therefore refer to this video on occasion to help improve our video.

Teacher Feedback from our Pitch

Group 10,
An excellently thought out pitch. You have made a great start with your planning as evidenced in your blog also. Your use of prototype cut outs was good in demonstrating your ideas, further aided by your playing of the existing music video. Try to look at (and evidence this) as many stop motion examples as possible and analyse their effectiveness. You may also find it extremely useful to do a practise scene to discover possible problems/issues that you may encounter when producing the video. Well done. You deserve to have the track you wanted!

:)

Analysis of Previous Student work

After watching this video and the seeing how the group made the robot move, our group decided we would have to set apart more time to make sure the characters movements were free flowing. The robots jerky movements work well in this video because robots do not move freely anyway and this dance track is very upbeat. I think the colours used in this video work well as they are bright, eye-catching. The video has a set colour scheme that is repeated though the whole video. By having a colour scheme you can set a mood

I like how this video follows conventions by having images that are linked to the lyrics. By doing this the audience is almost forced to listen to the music. This is a good thing seeing as the main aspect of this particular music video is to promote the music. By having imagery that follow the lyrics within the video, the lyrics become easier and clearer to follow and remember. This memory will be oif the words which means the audience walks away not just remembering the video but the song also.

The music video has no narrative which is a down point for us. as we will be following a definate storyline. By having no narrative this video leaves itself open to be as experimental and arty video as any video could be. With no boundaries, they would have had the potential to go down any route. i think we will learn from this particular video that although we do have a definate line for our video we can still make it as interesting to watch especially when it comes to variation. i hope our video will be experimentally different from any other istopmotion video that has been or will be made.

This music video also has some performance in it. It is break dancing so it follows the genre of the music. i think it is important to follow genre conventions in music videos as this reinforces the identity of the band. videos that follow genre conventions that people can define easily will draw a wider fan base as people will be able to identify with the video and the music. thus making it more enjoyable.

our music is indie and i think out video style is also very indie. by following genre conventions hopefully our video will be more enjoyable and easier to understand.

Junior Senior - Move Your Feet Analysis

I have chosen to talk about this video because it's very different and exciting. It also includes the same characteristics as our ideas, so I feel it's a good comparison.Firstly, I will look at the way they have constructed this video. They used Deluxe Paint to create the animation effect, this wound of taken ages to make every single character and background individually. There are several different characters like the squirrel and the dancing robot encouraging you to get up and dance. The music and song itself is very upbeat and used in dance clubs around the world. This aspect of the music video doesn't compare to our soundtrack as it is a slow and quiet song. Throughout the song and video of 'Move you feet' it take the lyrics literally as it does what the lyrics says. For example when is says 'people in the street' there is people in the street, also 'can't control my feet' they show some twisted legs trying to stop moving. This is the way we are going to try and set our video out, using the lyrics as our story and using the narrative literally. Our video is going to be bright and colourful throughout and as you can see this video is very bright and colourful so this relates to our idea as well. We are going to send as much time making each character and background like they have done but using different methods to create them.
There are loads of different camera angles which make the video more interesting and give it variety. There are close ups of different objects that look very professional and this is something we will try and incorporate into our music video. There is a medium length shot to get things like the legs in to make sure that’s all that’s in the shot. Also the shot that we will be using most in our video is the long shot which is used a lot in most video as it captures the whole scene.
The editing is very good in this video as there is a lot going on. There are loads of shots to organize in order and cut them the way you want. In this video the pace of the editing is at a fast speed changing the backgrounds and characters all the time. With our video we are planning on using the same character so that won’t be a problem but we have several different backgrounds which we need to change and flick between.

* Inspiration *

These two videos inspired our paper puppet idea.

These both include paper puppets which means they are used in professional videos. Also it means that it can target any audiences.

Labels:

Pitch

The track we have decided to use is 'Milkmaid' by Kid Harpoon, which is an Indie Pop song. We therefore target our video at teenagers and young adults, and this is the most popular music type of that age group. Our initial ideas were to film a live performance with a side narrative, but we have since realised that live performances are extremely popular, and we want to make our video unique. Therefore, our new idea is to combine live action and iStopMotion, through the use of paper or cardboard characters. The reason for this, is that the lyrics follow the dreams of a simple Milkmaid, who wants to become something that seems out of reality to her, therefore by taking the video out of reality, we can really pull the fantasy element out of the lyrics. So overall, we will make an effective and unique video.

We have posted a few of our influences in a separate blog. Influences include the new 'Sure' advert and Jack Penate's music video 'Torn on the platform.'
The new sure advert includes a paper girl cutting up some dresses from a magazine and dressing herself. The Jack Penate music video includes a man on a stage made of paper, who dances around, the video also includes direct translation from lyrics to paper.

We will make all of the props out of paper and cardboard in order to make them versatile. It gives us the opportunity to create them however we want, and to give it any image we want.

Our Individual Skills

Becky
I personally feel that I am strongest using programs such as iStop Motion. This is because I have used the program in many pas projects e.g. 'The Adventures of Paper Rabbit', shown in the video below.

This will be similar to our music video because it uses iStop Motion with paper characters. Because I have used iStop Motion many times before, I feel confident that I will be able to negotiate around the equipment.
As well as this, I also feel comfortable editing with Final Cut. We practised using Final Cut a lot during our AS year and I therefore feel that I will be able to use it effectively to cut, edit, and add music.

Louise
Hi!!!!
I feel that I can help with the drawing and making of our ideas like the background designs and so on. I think this because I completed my Art GCSE in secondary school which meant I had to be very creative and think up new ideas alot.
I also feel like I can comfortably work on the programme final cut as I have helped in the making of several videos in my AS year, as you can see in this video below . .

I am also good at researching relevant information or sources to help improve people's understanding of our project.

Kirsty
My name is Kirsty and these are the skills I think ican bring to this group. Last year Becky P and I worked well together so I am glad to be working with her again, I found that by using our skills jointly we could achieve a higher standard of work. I am also looking forward to working with Louise H, as she will bring new ideas and fresh skills to our group. Hopefully this bodes well for our music video.
I think my imaginative ideas will help the group come up with something original and different to what has been seen before. In the past my imagination has helped create such ideas as 'The Adventures Of Paper Rabbit' and 'Super Socks' I think the visual evidence is in the bright colours and alternative characters.

When it comes to equipment, like the other two members I am confident and feel that I will be able to navigate easily between creative planning and practical computing.

As a group we feel that we will perform like an organised team, the evidence of this will be through sticking to our deadline, and being present in lesson as often as possible. We will also make an effort to meet on a regular basis outside of lesson time to discuss new ideas, or troubles that we are experiencing. We have compared timetables and have come up with a few times that we can meet weekly.

"Heavy Metal Drummer" - Wilco

I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands
I used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love

Shiny, shiny pants and bleach-blond hair
A double kick drum by the river in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
Another and another
She fell in love

I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

Unlock my body and move myself to dance
Moving warm liquid, flowing blowing glass
Classical music blasting masks the ringing in my ears

I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands
I used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love with another
She fell in love

I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

First Blog!

We are Q1-10 who consists of Kirsty Leslie, Louise Housden and Becky Ponting! We will be making a music video following these deadline..
Pitch: 10th September
Animatic: 19th September
Rough Cut: 10th October
Final Video: 7th November
Picture House Screening: 12th November
Writing Draft: 1st December

Our first duty in this music video project was to choose the track and artist from a list of 13 potential songs. We listened to each one individually before making our choice of two finalists. Our first choice is 'Milkmaid' by Kid Harpoon, and our second is 'Heavy Metal Drummer' by Wilco. The reason we liked these tracks was because they followed a narrative, which is the type of video we would like to create. They were upbeat and happy, which inspired us to create an exciting and colourful video! The genre of both songs are Indie Pop, which suits our decision to make an alternative video without real people being in it. Our initial ideas were to make paper/cardboard characters and use iStop Motion to make a 2d story come alive!

We will animate the milkmaid character and following the narrative within the lyrics we will create a short story within a stage for the milkmaid taking each of the lyrics literally, e.g. her hands were big, character gets big hands. A milkmaid is quite an old fashioned concept, we feel this should be displayed in this style, so the video will be stylized to a specific time period e.g. 1930's, 1940's.
